Batumi International Container Terminal (BICT), the business unit of International Container Terminal Services (ICTSI) in Georgia, welcomed ADY Container LLC’s newly launched multimodal feeder service.
The rail-to-sea service connects Asia with Europe via the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor.
Its goal is to meet the capacity requirements of the Middle Corridor, which is experiencing a large increase in freight traffic due to the growing volume of transit through Azerbaijan, according to ICTSI.
Most of the cargo handled by the service includes exports from China.
For the sea leg, ADY Container and Azerbaijan’s Caspian Shipping Company deployed a feeder vessel to operate the route between the port of Batumi and Constanta in Romania every 10 days.
From there, the cargo is transported by rail to different destinations in Europe.
In the first four months of 2022, more than 9,000 TEU crossed the Trans-Caspian route. This is an increase of 30% compared to the volume from the same period last year.
Due to the current geopolitical situation in Europe, ADY Container expects a further increase in traffic through the Middle Corridor, which would require the addition of more ships.
