2M Alliance reschedules European services due to congestion issues

The largest container alliance in the world, 2M Alliance has decided to change the rotation of several services in Europe, due to port congestions and supply chain issues.

In particular, the alliance, which comprises Maersk and MSC, has announced that its Condor/AE7 service will be calling at Wilhelmshaven instead of Felixstowe until the end of the year, due to the ongoing congestion issues at Britain’s major port.

The first ship that will sail under the updated rotation will be the 15,908TEU MSC New York, voyage NR136W and the last one will be the 11,000TEU Eleonora Maersk voyage 144W.

The import cargo bound for the Port of Felixstowe will be routed via a shuttle service from Antwerp, according to the statement.

Additionally, 2M Alliance said that it will be omitting Antwerp on its Griffin/AE55 service and will have an inducement call at Le Havre for the next five sailings.

“As the situation at Antwerp has not improved, we will be continuing with the temporary port rotation change arrangement for the next few weeks,” note MSC.

Last but not least, 2M Alliance will omit the port of Le Havre at the Lion/AE6 service for the next four sailings, and they will continue to combine the Antwerp call.

Oakland confirms another first-call service

The Port of Oakland has announced it will land the fourth first-call service in 2021, as the Swiss shipping line MSC will use the Californian port as the initial US stop for its transpacific Sentosa service, a weekly service that links Oakland with ports in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The establishment of the new service will play a significant role in congestion relief, according to a statement. Through the Sentosa service, cargo owners could avoid sending cargo through Southern California ports and importers can bypass the region’s traffic, given the fact that over 60 ships a day awaiting outside the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Maritime Director at the Port of Oakland, Bryan Brandes expressed his enthusiasm for the launch of the new service, saying “We’re excited to welcome MSC’s service because Southeast Asia is an important, growing market.”

According to the US port, the new product is the fourth first-call service introduced at Oakland this year. MSC’s new Sentosa service follows first-calls introduced in Oakland this year by CMA CGM, Matson and Wan Hai Lines.

First-calls are where ships make their initial US stop after sailing from Asia, explained the Port of Oakland in its announcement.

Imports make up 55% of Oakland’s loaded container volume in 2021, as carriers have introduced new services to meet soaring consumer demand in the US for overseas products. Traditionally, the Californian port reports a 50-50 split between imports and exports.

MSC implements fresh charges in Europe

The Swiss shipping company MSC will apply fresh surcharges to several European ports “due to the strong demand of containers and consequent difficulties to supply needed equipment”, taking effect in September and October.

Particularly, the Geneva-based liner operator will impose a Peak Season Surcharge (PSS) from Northwestern (NWC) Europe, ScanBaltic, West Mediterranean, Adriatic and Canary Islands to all coasts of the United States (US) and the Caribbean.

The charge will be US$500 per TEU and US$1,000 per FEU, forming the new prices to US$2,200 and US$2,700 respectively, for all types of cargo, and will begin on 1 October.

On the same date, MSC will set a PSS from the same European places to Canada and Mexico, which will be US$500 per TEU and US$1,000 per FEU.

The new rates will therefore be US$1,500 and US$2,000 accordingly, for all types of containers.

Furthermore, the major shipping line will implement the following Freight All Kinds (FAK) rate increases for all 20′, 40′ standard and high cube boxes from Australia and New Zealand to the European ports Antwerp and Valencia.

All prices are in US$.

This increase will be applicable from 20 September but not beyond 30 September.
