Port of Melbourne reports container volume drop in May

27/06/2022

The Port of Melbourne has seen its total container handling in May, both full and empty boxes, decrease by 6% compared to the same month last year.

The major Australian port handled 271,053 TEU last month, with total container imports decreasing by 3.9% and total container exports increasing by 1.1%. At the same time, total movements of empty containers decreased by 14.1% compared to the same month in 2021.

Several factors, such as vessel scheduling issues, congestion and a reduced number of total services at the port, have contributed to the volume drop.

The Port of Melbourne noted that container trade for early June 2022 is tracking below the comparative month in 2021.
